iSeries Cobol ILE:
Intermediate Programming Workshop Using WDSC

This is an intermediate-level programming workshop for new COBOL programmers on the iSeries.   This workshop covers the approved ANSI COBOL '85 Standard and the draft ANSI COBOL '97 Standard, as well as the iSeries extensions to the standards for the ILE compiler.

The course will cover basic COBOL rules and syntax, and how to write, run, and debug both batch and interactive programs.

Program Objective:
Following the successful completion of this course, participants will be able to create use OVERLAY and DDS keywords to develop efficient COBOL programs using the Integrated Language Environment (ILE) for COBOL and the WebSphere Development Studio Client for the iSeries.

Specifically, participants will be able to create an intermediate-level COBOL program using the following techniques:

»  Write interactive COBOL ILE programs to that support inquiry of sub-files

»  Use OVERLAY and related DDS keywords to develop efficient interactive
        programs

»  Write interactive programs that support maintenance of sub-file records

»  Develop COBOL ILE programs that anticipate and manage common errors
        and exceptions

»  Write COBOL ILE Nested Programs, and to Call another program

»  Maintain existing applications written in the COBOL ILE language using the
ILE Source Debugger tool, determine the cause of incorrect results

»  Write ILE modules and include those modules in program objects using bind
by copy and bind by reference

»  Be introduced to Embedded SQL for COBOL ILE

Who Will Benefit From This Course:
This course is the second in the Agidigm curriculum for COBOL ILE on the iSeries, using the WDSC development tool.  This is an intermediate-level workshop for COBOL programmers who are new to the iSeries development environment.  Participants will develop an operational understanding of intermediate-level COBOL ILE compiler and extensions, as well as the WebSphere Development Studio Client for the iSeries running on a Windows-based PC.

»  Another high-level language on the iSeries

»  An IBM main-frame COBOL environment to the iSeries

    »  Non-IBM platforms using COBOL

This course is designed for programmers who need additional hands-on instruction and classroom learning opportunities with COBOL ILE. Individuals who are interested in learning fundamental COBOL programming skills on the iSeries should attend Agidigm's Introduction to iSeries COBOL (C102) course. Experienced programmers who have in-depth familiarity with COBOL ILE should consider attending Agidigm's COBOL ILE Advanced Topics for the iSeries (C104) course.

Participants should have completed the following Agidigm course (or equivalent) prior to enrolling in this course:

»  Introduction to iSeries COBOL (C101) - Optional

»  A self-paced study course for COBOL 400 (Manta or Rochester)

Before attending this course, the participants should be able to:
