Advanced Programming Workshop Using WDSC
In this course, programmers who can write comprehensive ILE COBOL programs
using the iSeries ILE COBOL compiler (Version 5) learn advanced skills and
techniques. Experienced ILE COBOL (Version 5) programmers will learn to
develop and maintain ILE COBOL programs of an advanced level using the latest
features and techniques available in the Version 5 compiler.
This course is designed for experienced programmers who need exposure to advanced
COBOL ILE programming techniques in a hands-on classroom environment. Individuals
who are interested in learning COBOL on the iSeries should consider attending the
Programming Fundamentals Using WDSC(C102)course. Intermediate COBOL ILE programmers
who would like additional hands-on exposure to COBOL ILE should consider attending
the Intermediate COBOL ILE Programming Workshop (C103) course.
Program Objective:
Following the successful completion of this course, participants will be able
to create a advanced COBOL programs using the Integrated Language Environment
(ILE) for COBOL and the WebSphere Development Studio Client for the iSeries.
Specifically, participants will be able to create a advanced COBOL programs using
the following techniques:
» Use of address pointers and user spaces in ILE COBOL programs
» Develop ILE modular objects and package them in service programs
» Explain the purpose of ILE activation groups
» Explain the behavior of error handling
» Call iSeries Application Programming Interfaces (API) from ILE COBOL
programs using the ILE Source Debugger tool.
» Write database triggers in ILE COBOL, and more
Who Will Benefit From This Course:
This course is the third in the Agidigm curriculum for COBOL ILE on the
iSeries, using the WDSC development tool. This is an advanced-level
workshop for COBOL programmers who are new to the iSeries development environment.
Participants will develop an advanced understanding of the COBOL ILE compiler
and extensions, as well as the WebSphere Development Studio Client for the
iSeries running on a Windows-based PC.
This course is primarily intended for programmers who are transitioning to
the iSeries COBOL ILE environment from:
» Another high-level language on the iSeries
» An IBM main-frame COBOL environment to the iSeries
» Non-IBM platforms using COBOL
This course will also benefit new programmers who need additional hands-on instruction
and classroom learning opportunities with COBOL. Individuals who are interested in
learning COBOL and batch processing fundamentals on the iSeries should consider attending
the Introduction to iSeries COBOL and Batch Processing Fundamentals (C101) course.
Prerequisites:
Participants must have completed the following IBM courses (or have equivalent experience)
prior to enrolling in this course:
» Introduction to iSeries for New Users (S6108)
» iSeries Application Programming Facilities Workshop (S6149), or
» iSeries Application Development Environment using WDSC, COBOL, &
Operation Navigator<

COBOL, BASIC or COBOL ILE)
» Use basic OS/400 navigation tools including:
· CL Commands
· Online Help
· WRKSPLF and related commands to manage output
· WRKJOB, DSPMSG, DSPJOB commands and so forth to perform basic
problem determination
