AMA's new COBOL ILE training curriculum is designed to "develop COBOL competency for progammers new to iSeries" according to Paul Lambert, AMA's President, "and is a a reflection of AMA's committment to the iSeries community."

Until now, there have been no insructor-led, classroom-based training courses with practical, hands-on labs to bring programmers new to the iSeries up to an acceptable level of proficiency with COBOL ILE. Previous to the introduction of AMA's iSeries COBOL ILE curriculum, company's who wanted to train programmers that were new to COBOL on the iSeries were limited to either attending older COBOL 400 courses, or using a variety of of self-study materials.

As individuals in the programming and training fields understand, the most desirable way to learn a complex programming language rapidly, and to an acceptable level of professional proficiency, is by attending an instructor-led course. While AMA reconizes the benefit of self-study to gain additional familiarity with COBOL ILE prior to attending a formal course, and even provides recommendations of self-study materials that we feel would benefit an individual, we agree with the programming community that our approach of providing knowledgeable, professional instructors with solid experience in COBOL ILE will provide the most cost-effective means to learn this version of COBOL.

AMA's COBOL ILE curriculum is comprises four integrated courses. Three primary courses will take an individual who is new to COBOL ILE from understanding the fundamentals of COBOL ILE on the iSeries to employing advanced concepts that are necessary in today's web-centric programming environment. Additionaly, there is a fourth 'precursor' course that is designed to provide individuals who are new to COBOL and batch processing concepts with an appreciation of COBOL's strength and utilization as the world's leading batch processing langauge for business.
